Musing: The Philo Effect

Phoebe Philo remains a constant source of inspiration for us. We love her not only for her impressive accomplishments since taking over Céline, but also for her own personal style and aesthetics. She single-handedly revived Céline with her modern and minimalistic philosophy towards fashion. Her attention to shapes, textures, colors, and materials brought a new subtleness often overlooked by many other luxury brands. Moving away from the maximalist approach, Phoebe’s designs stripped away the unnecessary and captured the essence of each article of clothing. This way of designing was reminiscent of the Bauhaus movement and mid-century aesthetics. The world got a glimpse of her personal style when she was seen during the runway show for Céline 2011 wearing her Stan Smith adidas rather than the fashion uniform of high heels. Since then, the sneaker trend has taken the world by storm, and it was all started with Phoebe Philo.

Because of Phoebe's influence, we no longer have to choose between form and function. It is acceptable to wear sneakers with a suit or a dress. The oversized silhouette is no longer sloppy but is rather a purposeful choice. Phoebe’s passion and her infection style have become a way of life--having us saying “WWPPD,” What would Phoebe Philo do?

Taking a page from Phoebe's book, we both have been looking to find new ways to style our black Nike Free Runs 5.0 outside of working out. We have been relieved to take a break from our senselessly stiff (albeit pretty) shoes. With our minimalistic closets and style, the Free Runs have fit in seamlessly with the rest of our neutral and basic clothes. It's a wonder how we've gone on this long without wearing them outside of the gym. Whether we are wearing them with joggers and pullovers or with jeans and a t-shirt, we've been enjoying walking the town with these comfortable sneakers. We've pulled inspiration from Pinterest and cannot wait to continue styling them.

  3. I am not a huge fan of pairing sneakers with dressy attire but I have learned to open myself up more to it. I have slowly been persuaded by the creativity of bloggers such as yourself. I really like your Nike trainers. They are quite chic and certainly support the modern fashion descriptor sporty chic.

  4. I love reading and learning about style icons. Phoebe Phillo certainly is just that. I've got a pair of black nike free runs on my wish list right now and this post only makes me want them even more. I love that it can turn more dressy attire into something casual and more day to day.

  6. I love Nike Frees! They're super comfortable but too bad I messed mine up from working out and hikes so it won't look so clean when I try to wear it with a "fashionable" outfit. Now I feel like I need a new pair!

  8. I love these Nikes. If I'd get any, it would be these. The colourful ones are nice to look at but I'd get tired of them too soon.

  12. I really like some of the pieces she designed, but I'm personally not a huge fan of sneakers, especially not with elegant looks ;)

I actually know in advance that one of my Christmas gifts is the pair of black and white Nike trainers as shown at the end of this post, and these photos serve as a source of excitement (even more!) in anticipation of receiving them!! :) Have a lovely week ahead..
